How I Knew My Liver Was Healing — Before Test Results Proved It

Let's flash back to when my diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) …there was an overwhelming need to know just one thing: How will I know if I am getting better? I wanted to understand the real liver-healing signs I should watch for, long before my next set of results.

The obvious answer? Blood work and FibroScan results. But those tests don't happen every week. They happen months apart. So, between appointments, I often found myself wondering whether the changes I was making were actually making a difference. I needed that reassurance.

Well, I quickly learned that, for me, healing didn't feel like one big breakthrough. It felt like a collection of small changes that slowly added up over time.

I had more energy day to day

One of the first things I noticed was that I was collecting more and more energy, which turned out to be one of the earliest liver healing signs I experienced. No, I didn't wake up one morning feeling like a completely different person, but I did realize that I wasn't dragging myself through the day the way I used to. Everyday tasks felt a little easier, and I found myself wanting to move more instead of avoiding it. I wasn't drowning in the simple, everyday movements. As a full-time work-from-home mom with 2 littles under 4, this was a massive improvement. It was a necessary improvement.

Improved digestion

Don't even get me started on my digestion. Before my diagnosis, I dealt with frequent bloating that left me feeling uncomfortable and discouraged. As I continued making changes to the way I ate, I noticed those episodes became less frequent, one of the clearer signs of liver healing I could feel firsthand. It wasn't perfect, but I began having more good days than bad ones.

A changing relationship with food

My biggest green flag was that my relationship with food was changing. In the beginning, I thought reversing fatty liver meant following a strict diet or giving up every food I enjoyed. Instead, I discovered that consistency mattered more than perfection. I stopped seeing it as restriction and started seeing the foods I ate as upgrades.

I kept eating the foods I loved and enjoyed, but found ways to make them healthier and more supportive of my body. Over time, those choices became habits instead of something I had to think about every day. This shift itself was one of the quieter signs of healing I now recognize. It became a lifestyle. It became… MY lifestyle.

Weight, strength, and other physical signs of healing

As my habits became consistent, my weight started to change. I was feeling stronger. Daily activities didn't leave me as exhausted as they once had. Those changes motivated me far more than the scale ever could, and looking back, they were visible signs of liver healing long before I had a test to confirm it. And no, I still am not where I want to be, but I am a whole world different than I was.

Confirming liver healing signs with medical testing

Even with these encouraging signs of liver healing, I reminded myself that how I felt wasn't enough to tell me what was happening inside my liver. Feeling better didn't necessarily mean my liver had healed. So, my healthcare team and I did regular blood work and annual FibroScan testing to monitor my progress. These tests are what eased my anxiety over my MASLD diagnosis.

Last month, I had my annual FibroScan, and the results confirmed what I had been hoping for. Remarkable improvement: The stage 3 steatosis that had once frightened me was gone. I read the results and couldn't believe it: Stage 0.

I immediately felt so emotional, because these results represented years of consistent effort rather than one perfect decision.

What liver healing signs actually looked like

At first, I expected an obvious moment when I would suddenly know everything was working. Instead, healing looked much quieter. These subtle signs of liver healing were easy to miss if I wasn't paying attention.

It looked like fueling my body instead of feeding my emotions. It looked like taking my kids for a walk around the pond after every meal. It looked like no restrictions in what I ate, just upgrades. It looked like celebrating small victories instead of waiting for perfection. It looked like noticing small signs of liver healing in the most ordinary daily moments. Most of all, it looked like trusting the process, even during the months when I had no test results to reassure me.

My takeaways on liver health

Today, my improved FibroScan and lab work are something I'm incredibly proud of, but they aren't the only milestones I remember. I also remember the first day I noticed I had more energy, the first time I realized my bloating wasn't controlling my day, and the moment healthy habits started feeling like part of my life instead of a temporary plan.

Those small moments didn't prove that my liver was healing. My medical testing did that. But they were still meaningful signs of liver healing worth paying attention to. They did remind me that meaningful progress often happens long before we see it reflected on paper.

Sometimes the biggest transformations begin so gradually that we only recognize them once we look back at how far we've come.
